the huerta

We're a small and growing community in Xàbia that loves eating food we've grown ourselves. We respect nature and the soil, we avoid pesticides, and we try to protect and shelter biodiversity. As of Spring 2026, we are starting in a fresh new location!

We're actively looking for experienced and beginner gardeners, alike! Learn more or reach out now to reserve an allotment 👩‍🌾🧑‍🌾

freshest veggies

It's not easy to source locally produced organic vegetables in Spain. That's why we took on the challenge of starting an allotment, ourselves. Here's what it may, one day, look like:

always growing

It takes a lot of planning to make the soil hum with life. Instead of mono-plantation, we mix crops of different heights, seeking symbiosis

  • Chard, cauliflower, lettuce, leeks

  • Broccoli, carrot, zucchini, pumpkin

  • Artichoke, strawberry, garlic

  • Beans, peas, sweet potato, corn

  • Onion, pepper, potato, eggplant

On top of the vegetables we grow, we are also taking care of two rows of orange trees. We're working to transition them to ecological, meaning fewer chemical inputs and more natural abundance! At some point in the future, we'd love to setup a tree nursery, specifically for native trees!

join us

It's not easy to find a place to grow your own food and flowers around Javea. We know because we tried, for many months, with no success. So we want to open up this opportunity to others! If you'd like to rent an allotment and help us cover the starting costs (tractor services, fence, soil amendments, equipment), reach out! In the future (2027 most likely) we'll also be looking for volunteers.

garden with us

Most of us know we should grow more of our own food. Fewer of us actually do it. Life gets in the way, space is hard to find, and it can feel like something other people do.This is our attempt to make it easy to start gardening vegetables. A sunny plot, good soil, people who can help nearby, and no pressure to be perfect.Ashley, Kieron, Ovi, and Lolo are behind 'the huerta' - one of Javea's few community gardens. We all love good food and have learned the simple secret: you have to grow it yourself.Join us on this journey of regenerative farming by learning and doing.Come as a beginner; leave with tomatoes. Come with experience; share it with others.

a few common questions

Do I need to have gardening experience?
Not at all. We're building this for beginners and experienced growers alike. If you've never grown anything, this is a great place to start — and you'll have people around you who can help.
How much time does it take?
That depends on what you grow and the time of year, but most plot holders visit 2–3 times a week during the growing season. Installing an automated watering system might mean fewer visits still.
Can I grow whatever I want?
Mostly yes. We ask that you avoid chemical pesticides/herbicides and invasive species. Nothing that substantially shades a neighour. Synthetic fertilizer is OK as long as it's dosed accurately.
What happens if I go on holiday?
Life happens. Just let us know in advance and we can usually sort out a neighbor to water for you. The community side of this is real — people look out for each other.
I'm not fluent in Spanish — is that a problem?
Not at all. The community is a mix of locals and internationals, and we communicate in both English and Spanish. You'll feel at home either way.
